Familiars

Bind a companion that fights at your side and grows with you.

A familiar is a creature bound to you that follows you into the world, fights alongside you, and levels up the more it fights. Any class can have one.

Binding a familiar

Familiars are bound from a tome. Find or buy the tome for the creature you want and /use it — that species is then bound to you for good. Each tome names a specific familiar, so the one you study is the one you get; browse them all in the Familiar Library.

You can study a tome any time, but you must be level 25 to actually call your familiar into the world.

Calling and naming

Once bound, /familiar calls your companion to your side; use it again to send it away. Give it a name with /familiar name <name> (2–20 letters) — its name then shows in its own colour wherever it appears.

In combat

Your familiar joins your fights automatically, striking whatever you are fighting. It has its own health and stamina and attacks on its own cadence. Call it off a target at any time with /familiar stop — useful when you want to break away cleanly rather than drag it into a fight you would rather avoid.

Each species has an archetype that sets how it fights: swift companions strike often for less, heavy ones hit hard but slowly, and balanced ones sit in between. Pick the feel that suits how you play.

Growing your familiar

A familiar earns experience from the blows it lands, keeping half of what those hits are worth (you receive a smaller share of it too), and climbs from level 1 to 10. Higher levels mean more health, more stamina, and harder hits — so the more you adventure together, the stronger it becomes. The simplest way to level it is simply to keep it out and fighting beside you.

Looking after it

Familiars are not disposable. If yours is hurt, /treat restores its health for a little gold; if it falls in battle, /revive brings it back, again for a fee that scales with its level. You never lose the bond itself — a fallen familiar can always be revived.

Tip: Keep an eye on your familiar's health the way you watch your own. A treat between fights is far cheaper than a revive after one.
